
SAATH’s principal, Surabhi Dhar’s work in India has primarily comprised of criminal defense and constitutional protection of rights and civil liberties. With the understanding that many constitutional liberties are tested and guaranteed only through criminal law and trial courts, Surabhi’s first understanding of being a human rights lawyer was as a criminal defense lawyer.
Surabhi has also represented complainants in cases of sexual offences or in cases where the police have refused to take action, or the State is not able to conduct the prosecution. Surabhi has worked on speech and association offences, trials in body offences especially sexual assault offences, criminal writ proceedings as a petitioner, and other economic offences.
Surabhi has also worked on white collar criminal defense which also brings additional perspective to her current work on international whistleblower claims. SAATH’s criminal law is focused on trials courts in and around Delhi, the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court although SAATH can advise and collaborate on criminal cases in other states in India.
